Monk costumes and costume accessories for disguise and late night festivities at the convent. From early times there has been a lively discussion of the meaning of the term monk. Does it denote someone living alone and away from the rest of society, or someone celibate and focused on God alone? In modern terms monks are referred to as a "monastic", a person who practices religious asceticism, the conditioning of mind and body in favor of the spirit, and does so living either alone or with any number of like-minded people, with some degree of physical separation from the outside world. The concept is ancient and can be seen in many religions and philosophies. The term in Greek can apply to men or women. In modern English it is reserved only for men, while female monastics are termed as nuns.
Nowadays it is often wrongly assumed that monks live in community. That is merely one kind of monk, called a cenobite. In the earliest age of Christian monasticism the ascetics were accustomed to live singly, independent of one another, not far from some village church, supporting themselves by the labour of their own hands, and distributing the surplus after the supply of their own scanty wants to the poor. Increasing religious fervour, aided by persecution, drove them farther and farther away from the civilization into mountain solitudes or lonely deserts. The earliest known Christian monastic communities consisted of groups of cells or huts collected about a common centre, which was usually the house of some hermit or anchorite famous for holiness or singular asceticism, but without any attempt at orderly arrangement. Such communities were not an invention of Christianity. The example had been already set in part by the Essenes in Judea and perhaps by the Therapeutae in Egypt.
